The Great Challenge in Rio Olympic 2016
-South Korean Man’s National Soccer Team-
In August 6, 2016, the Rio Olympics fi nally
opened with massive expectations of sports
fans all around the world. But do you know
that soccer games in this Olympic opened 2
days before the raising of the curtain? This
is because the soccer matches require a long
term tournament which is different from other
events. This was sensational for the soccer
fans from South Korea, because the Korean
Soccer Team got a bronze medal in last
Olympic in London, 2012 and they expected to
have another good opportunities challenge in
soccer event again.
South Korea was placed in Group C with
Fiji, Olympic Soccer for the first time, and
Germany, which has a powerful U-23 Squad

in Europe, and Mexico, the Gold medalist in
soccer at the last Olympics in London, 2012.
To advance to quarterfinals, South Korea had
to win at least 2 matches. Compared to other
groups, Group C had the weakest team and the
strongest team. Here’s how the game went.
On August 5th, South Korea had the first
match against Fiji. The result was 8-0 and
South Korea headed on the first ranking of
Group C because the match between Germany
and Mexico was 2-2 draw. Sueng-woo Ryu
who plays for Bayer Leverkusen scored a hat
trick in this game. Also, Chang-hoon Gwon
and Hyun-jun Suk scored 2 goals each and the
famous wild card player Heung-min Son from
Tottenham Hotspur scored a goal.
