Ⅲ Social Issues
Become insensitive to safety,
are we really safe?
We hear the news of numerous safety incidents
through various means. What do you think
when you hear these news stories? Don’t you
think People got hurt because of a traffic acci-
dent, or I’ll never experience this kind of thing?
Unconsciously, people don’t protect themselves
from the accidents occuring in daily life, believ-
ing they are always safe. This is called safety
frigidity and is probably the biggest cause of
negligent accidents. The collapse of the Sam-
poong department store and the Sewol ferry af-
fair, which caused many people to feel pain,
both occurred because of safety frigidity. Safety
frigidity is the state of being insensitive to accidents or losing any particular feeling
to incidents because we are accustomed to
safety. What is the cause of the safety frigidity
and how can we fix it?
Mostly, safety frigidity arises because we hold
that we are safe, don’t know about basic com-
mon-sense safety regulations, and think acci-
dents will not happen to us. Perhaps if science
and technology that safeguards people continues
to develope, this effect will intensify. Then, what
are some ways to deal with safety frigidity?
The first way to solve safety frigidity is to pay special attention in places where the
safety accidents occurs frequently. The places where acci-
dents occur frequently include houses, roads, subway stations,
and near water. These places are not very special as we can
see and go to these places every day. Accidents can happen
anywhere near us.
The second way is to participate actively in civil defense train-
ing. Civil defense training is a series of systematic civilian de-
fense activities formed to guard citizens’ lives and property
