Diplomatic Relation of US and China

As the two leading global powers today, their interactions and how they mutually treat each
other has been a crucial aspect of worldwide peace. Their relationship has been undergoing
significant changes and their cooperation, competition and contradiction affected the
international security, trade and governance.

Trade and Economic Relation

Problems regarding trade and economy between the US and China are seen as a crucial
part of their relationship. Their trade war began when Donald Trump was in charge and led
to the imposition of tariffs, which worsened the interrelation between the two countries.
However, both of the nations signed the Phase One trade deal in January 2020, agreeing
on solving trade imbalance and refining accessibility of US products in the Chinese market.
Despite the agreement, some of the problems discussed still remain unsolved. This is why
they are still holding talks about market access.

Technology and Cybersecurity

Both the US and China have been at the forefront
of advancements in technology. Therefore,
both perceive each other as a threat in
earning the dictatorship over the
technology and cybersecurity. The
US sees China’s developments in
5G technology, artificial intelligence
and cyber security as a challenge
to their technological leadership.
As a result, US has taken measures
to prevent China from thriving with
their technology, banning Chinese tech
industries like Huawei from taking advantage
of US technology. They also increased scrutiny
on technology transfers, which heightened the
tensions and led to reciprocal measures from
China as well.
