Introduction to the 1st grade curriculum
In the first year of high school, students are introduced to a range of subjects that
are different from those in middle school. These subjects provide students with the
opportunity to build foundational knowledge while developing creative and critical thinking
skills. Some subjects, like science, art, English literature, and music, are unique to the first
year and cannot be found in the second year. These courses offer special experiences that
help students grow in different ways.
Science classes do not just focus on teaching scientific facts, but also on learning how to solve
problems scientifically. At Incheon Foreign Language High School, the science curriculum
encourages independent learning. Students explore various materials on their own and engage
in group projects and team activities, which provide opportunities for collaborative learning. This
approach helps students develop problem-solving skills and teamwork, while also teaching them
how to conduct independent research.
In the English literature class, first-year students are introduced to English literary works. They
improve their reading comprehension and grammar through exercises like memorizing vocabulary
for the college entrance exam and studying grammar with books like “Grammar is Key to Reading
Comprehension.” The literary works studied are not just valuable for their literary qualities, but
also for helping students gain insights into society and human nature. The first-year English
literature course combines exam
preparation with literary analysis and
includes books like “Factfulness,” which
broadens students’ critical thinking and
social awareness.
Art classes are an important time for
first-year students to develop creativity
and self-expression. The art curriculum
in the first year combines basic art
theory with practical exercises. Students
use various materials and techniques
to create their own works of art. In each
class, students learn to apply theoretical
knowledge to their practice. Through hands-on activities, they are encouraged to explore their
imagination, experiment with different artistic techniques, and find their own creative style. Art
classes teach students how to express emotions and ideas through visual art, and show that art is
more than just a hobby—it is a powerful tool for personal expression. The art experience in the first
