                           I-Guinness ‘For the Record’

Guinness records are a set of records accumulated worldwide, ranging from astonishing feats such
as the oldest person alive to some pretty peculiar ones like the longest fingernails. Every time some-
one achieves a new feat and thinks it worthy to be recorded for future reference, that individual puts
his own name down in the Guinness World Records. Keeping a record of something is the perfect
way to inform other people how we are progressing and reminds us of the limits we have to over-
come. Of course, it is also simply a pleasure to dream up weird categories to fill up the book.
I-Guinness could also be seen as an attempt to escape normal boundaries and a daring tryout for
all participants to experience a totally different event. The first I-Guinness took place in Incheon
Foreign Language High School successfully as students participated in various events of their own
choice. Various clubs offered rare chances to participate in the events openly instead of cheering
their teams from far away. These events were prepared beforehand, explicitly written and suggested
by students who wished to see their own crazy games in the open. Some of the most noteworthy
were the most humiliating (for the participants) and the most hilarious (for the gleeful spectators),
such as ‘How fast can you drink a bottle of Pepsi?’ and ‘How many marshmallows can you stuff in-
side your mouth?” Others included were ‘How slow can you go on your bike?’, ‘How many shots
can you make in one minute?’, ‘How fast can you assemble a cube?’, and so on, and so forth. Every
one of these challenged students to do the improbable and try to break the limit for each of these
contents. For every winner of the contest, each Department got a point for the I-Guinness festival.
In the end, the Chinese department emerged as the department with the most winners, almost dom-
inating the scoring board with its students, and thus secured the winning point.
All in all, it was a new experience for everyone, for the I-Guinness was the first attempt in IFLHS
history to hold this in its annual sports event. In retrospect, even though the races had to be replaced
to much protest, it was clear that the I-Guinness championship provided a greater experience for
the students. This time, no one was left behind the seats, and everyone stood up to participate in
the games. One of the reasons people keep trying to register their name in the Guinness Book of
Records is that everyone, literally everyone can try out their chances. Unlike the Olympics or the
World Cup, there are no limits or qualifications to participate, and no one is left alone in the merry
race to break the limit. I-Guinness was truly a unique experience in that everyone could join in, from
the making of the games to the actual participation itself. The best game that ever exists is the kind
where you can actually play a role in. I-Guinness proved that IFLHS surely is a place where every-
one can join in the hubbub. Sports day 2017 in IFLHS truly was everybody’s league.
