A big step against the pandemic begins
South Korea has served on the board from 2020
through 2023.
The WHO's board is made up of 34 countries from six
regions around the world.
Board members can screen the WHO's budget and
play an important part in policy implementation
and strategy formulation by the international health
organization.
In May 2023, the WHO declared the end of the
COVID-19 outbreak after 3 years and held the World
Health Assembly (WHA).
The WHA is the WHO's governing forum and its top
decision-making bod.
The K-Pop boy band BTS also attended the session
as special speakers via a live video feed to deliver
a message of hope for young generations who have
been affected by the public health crisis.
Last year, the WHA agreed to promote revisions to the International Health Regulations (IHR)
to grant stronger authority and responsibility to the WHO.
Finally, they reached the IHR amendment at the WHA held in June this year. Accordingly,
the WHO member countries must cooperate when requested by other member countries or
WHO, taking into account national laws and available resources.
The amendment will take effect from next year upon the consent of member countries.
South Korea will actively share with the rest of the world its experience dealing with the
COVID-19 outbreak and play a role in the post-coronavirus period as the world moves to
recover from the fallout of the pandemic.
