This is a group gang rape case given mob violence by 44 male high school students in
Miryang Gyeongsangnam-do, against five female minors, including the main victim Choi
who was a female middle school student for as long as one year. It was revealed that
the Ulsan Southern Police Station, which investigated this case, only investigated
13 of the 44 perpetrators, and no one was punished. This
case is an old one, but it surfaced again recently when
youtubers revealed the names, ages, and workplaces of the
perpetrators. As the case became a hot topic, citizens who
were angry about the case are posting comments criticizing
Miryang City on the bulletin board of the Miryang City Hall
website.

The case started in June 2003. Victim Choi's younger brother
dialed the wrong phone number and made the first call to
the perpetrator. After that, they chatted for six months and
became close friends. Since they had been friends for a
long time through chatting, the victim let her hair down and
went to Miryang, where the perpetrator was, where she was
gang-raped and filmed with hidden cameras. He also posed
threats to spread the video on the Internet. After that, the crime continued,
and the victim was unable to ask for help anywhere due to
threats to tell her parents and school. The aunt, who noticed
that her niece was different from usual, reported it to the police.
The perpetrators were arrested immediately upon reporting, but
Miryang police distributed a press release to reporters, ignoring
the victim's request for a private investigation.
At the time, the organization conducted a survey out of curiosity
about how Miryang citizens viewed this case. A survey was
conducted on 645 local residents at the sexual violence counseling center in Miryang. When
asked in the survey who was responsible for the case, 36% (232 people) said the man was
responsible, and 64% (396 people) said the woman was responsible.
