Deepfake is a combination of "deep learning" and "fake," a technology that uses AI to create
fake images or videos quickly in large quantities. This technology first appeared on Reddit, a
large American online community, in 2017 and has since developed rapidly. But these days, it is
often exploited for things like fake news.
Deepfake Technology, Relevance to Fake News
Deepfake technology is mainly used for video editing. However, when used maliciously, it
can play a big role in spreading false information, which has the potential to be exploited for
production and dissemination. These are emerging as important issues in modern society, and
they are closely related to each other. The first is the decrease in credibility. Fake news using
deepfake technology can manipulate real people's remarks or actions. This has a great impact
on the way the public accepts information, increases the risk of misinformation spreading, and
can be less reliable. The second is social chaos. Fake news produced in deepfakes can cause
social confusion. For example, if you manipulate politicians or celebrities' remarks to make
them say something they did not say, it can distort public opinion and cause social conflict.
Deepfake, Misuse Cases
In May 2023, a deep-fake video circulated about former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's
support for her opponent, the Republican presidential candidate. The video created social
chaos by manipulating comments that Clinton did not actually make. Also, it negatively affected
