circumstances occur, countries that are affected directly are poverty-stricken countries. Because natural
environments provide a resource for survival, people quickly become climate refugees. According to IDMC
(Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre), there were around 24.9 million new climate refugees in 2019.
This figure is almost 3 times higher than the number of refugees caused by conflict.
A solution to refugee issues
To resolve this rapidly increasing refugee problem, refugees have to access essential resources and
services. The ultimate purpose is to make refugees able to rely on themselves. The UN(United Nations) has
divided the solution of the refugee problem into three.
First is returning spontaneously. To actualize this proposal, ensuring their own country is safe and secure is
the first step.
Second is being integrated in the current place. For this to be possible, the place they are located has to
allow them to stay. After this happens, they have to execute economic activities and live a daily life.
Last is to help them resettle. When refugees fail to be integrated in the place where they were residing, they
have to search for a new place in a different country. For the most part, these places have incompatible
culture or values in comparison with the previous one. Helping them to find a new place and adjust to it is
one of the important assignments.
The first step in refugee accommodation
When some of the countries accommodate refugees,
what should they do? Is it the end? No, like I mentioned
above, they have to help them to be integrated well.
But how? The first step in refugee accommodate is
‘breaking the language barrier’. Being exposed to
an environment where they can socialize with local
people is essential to them. Because they had different
environments, cultures, languages, they require
communication in the new location. They have to be
educated, and this will help them to thrive in the new
environment.
The increased number of refugees is not a problem
to pass by so easily anymore. It’s emerging in not just
some countries but around the globe. On June 20th,
World Refugee Day, the UN urged people to take an interest in refugees. There is no need for enormous
help; just a little concern may be enough. People who can resolve the problem may be us, people like you
and me.
