the New Dawn

Sun splits the sky / new day
to get misery / by old story
Girl seats, silent, desperate to be brave
thinks she’s ready, but Running Heart deceives

Shouts get louder / chokes tear
hides fear / wound is here

once loving hands turn cold
granny, auntie, mommy
taking over the tradition they upheld
“cross for us must be drawn, honey”

pain breaks her, paralyzes her dream
cuts away ‘later’, shortens her beam
nothing remembered, not even partly
until nothing remains, completely

stop / rewind / restart
this is the New Dawn
fear into aspire
despair into desire

Girls
you shall not be suffocated anymore under the name of religion
you shall not be deprived of future by the name of convention
you shall look after you childhood’s future preparation

Wake, young girls
Now is the new dawn.
