KCON: Expanding Hallyu into the Broader Cultural Market
This special exhibition features 250 items, including contemporary artworks by globally recognized Korean
artists, costumes from Korean fashion designers, film props, photographs, videos, and popular cultural
artifacts. Among the many artworks representing Korean pop culture are a recreation of the bathroom set
from the film "Parasite," photographs from the KCON LA event that has been pivotal in the global spread
of Hallyu since 2012, costumes worn by Psy in the "Gangnam Style" music video, and light sticks used
by various K-pop artists. The museum engaged visitors to experience Hallyu. To enhance interest in the
exhibition, the museum hosted a celebratory event called MFA Late Nites, featuring K-pop performances,
a fan interaction lounge, lectures on Korean artworks, and ceramic decoration activities, offering diverse
ways to engage with Korean culture.
Building a Sustainable K-Culture
Mr. Kim Gu emphasized the power of culture by saying, “All I want is the power of high culture.” We
need to expand the scope so that the global Korean Wave can expand beyond a temporary pop culture
phenomenon to encompass all of Korean culture, including pure art. In the future, continuous research and
support are needed to build a sustainable K-Culture through new attempts to connect culture and art.
