Recently, there have been lots
of crimes related to deepfakes.
However, many of us don't even
know the exact meaning of the
word. So, before we talk about the
pros and cons of deepfakes and
the serious crimes related to it,
we will tell you about the meaning
and origin of it. Deepfake is the
combination of Deep Learning and
fake, which means it's a human
image synthesis technique.
Although the word was first used to stand for technology that changed a person's face into others'
face by a Reddit user "Deepfakes", it is now used to refer to any photo, video, and audio which was
made to look real by AI.
Deepfake technology has many advantages. First, it can produce many creative contents.
Deepfake technology enables digital reproduction of actors who have already died or are currently
inactive, enabling more diverse characters and stories to be realized in movies or TV dramas.
Also, you can also use celebrity faces for advertising or create customized advertising content for
the promotion of brands and products. Second, it helps with a literary study. You can contribute to
academic research by recreating the original form in ancient documents or works. Last, it helps
with health care. Deepfake technology can be used to analyze a patient's face to help identify
signs of a specific disease. It can also be used to provide personalized counseling in virtual
treatment settings or to practice coping with specific situations.
The misuse of deepfake technology has been on the rise globally, with notable instances including
identity theft for election manipulation and financial fraud. Among the most pressing issues is
the creation and distribution of sexually exploitative content through deepfake technology. As
advancements in this technology have made it easier to produce such content, the proportion
of minors among the perpetrators has also surged. In 2021, teenagers accounted for 65.4%
of suspects in cases involving fabricated videos, but this figure rose to 73.6% in the first seven
months of 2024. However, due to the anonymity and closed nature of cyberspace, investigations
into these crimes are often challenging. The arrest rate for crimes involving fabricated videos
stands at a mere 49.5%, highlighting the difficulties faced by law enforcement. Platforms
like Telegram, which operate servers overseas, have proven uncooperative, with requests for
information often going unanswered.
The rise of deepfakes has brought about a new set of regulatory challenges and considerations.
Regulators must face the moment to provide guardrails for the use of technology as it scales
