The Problem and its Solutions
As stated above, the album is comprised of a CD, mixed plastic, and coated paper, making it near
impossible to recycle it. Considering that about 60 million to 70 million K-pop albums are sold every year,
and at least 100 tons are disposed of as trash, the negative effect on the environment is unavoidable. In
order to overcome this situation, we need efforts like companies expanding their digital record sales and
selling other goods separately. But to solve this problem fundamentally, it is also required to change the
industries’ marketing strategy that promotes overconsumption. Luckily, HYBE, JYP, and YG Entertainment
have already started to listen to their fans’ voices. BTS members wore upcycled black suits at their speech
in ‘the 76th United Nations General Assembly’, promoting carbon-neutrality. HYBE Labels also revealed
their plans to invest in NFT to create and release digital platform products and reduce waste and carbon
footprints. Moreover, YG Entertainment unleashed their BLACKPINK goods made out of eco-friendly
materials.
