The history of the IoT
In 1999, after 30 years since the invention of the internet, the term ‘Internet of Things’ was coined
by Kevin Ashton, the head of the Auto-ID Center in MIT. At that time, Kevin worked for a company
called P&G, which manufactured various consumer goods such as soap, shampoo, and toothbrush.
The IoT derived from his idea that just like
securing visibility by attaching RFID tag on the
products, a new world will arrive if every object
in the world could be connected.
After that, the concept of the IoT expanded,
conjoining with various sensing and
communication technologies. Typical examples
are WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) and M2M
(Machine-to-Machine).
The IoT in Korea
In Korea, companies like SAMSUNG and
LG are focusing on the Internet of Things
to occupy the market first. SAMSUNG has
already taken over an American IoT company
called Smart Things. It also has invested ten
million dollars in an Israeli IoT company to
help technical development. LG has shown
many achievements in the IoT technology. They
have released a system called ‘IoT at home’
which enabled us to control the temperature
or the door lock of our home. They have been
striving to popularize their IoT technology by
experiential marketing. .
