About AlphaGo
Positive Future of Artificial Intelligence
Recently, a big match between Alphago and
Sedol Lee occurred from March 9th to 15th,
2016. It attracted people’s attention around the
world. A number of media paid attention to the
contest, and desperately reported every games’
result. Also, experts showed their personal point
of view and predicted the next game’s progress.
So, why is AlphaGo becoming a hot issue, and
what it is?
AlphaGo is a computer program developed
by Google MindMap in London to play the
board game Go, which is commonly known as
Badook in Korea. It saves the existing methods,
and plays an uncountable number of games
with itself, then learns about Go and makes
its own strategy. So then, how was the contest
established? The championship prize money
was surprisingly as high as 1,000,000 U.S
dollar(110,000,000 won), and the condition
was that Sedol Lee will get 20,000 dollars per
each game if he wins the game. Moreover, he
had already received 150,000 dollars before the
game regardless to the result of the game. If he
had won 3 games in 5, he would have received
all of the championship prize money, or else
the money would be donated to the UNICEF,
STEM, or “Go” related charity.
AlphaGo had already defeated the European
Go champion Fan Hui. This game was the
first time a computer ‘Go program’ had taken
a victory from a professional human player
without handicap. Also, the same version of
AlphaGo was used to confront Sedol Lee. The
game took place at the Four Seasons Hotel in
Seoul, South Korea, and was video-streamed
live. Aja Huang, a DeepMind team member
and amateur 6-dan Go player, placed stones on
the Go board for AlphaGo, which ran through
Google's cloud computing servers located in the
United States. The match used Chinese rules.
Then what was the final result of the duel? In
the end, AlphaGo took 4 games out of 5. It took
set1, set2, set3, and set5. And Sedol Lee won set
4. During set 4, AlphaGo showed some errors
when it placed the stone in weird places on the
board. So meanwhile, many experts believe
that artificial intelligence is not perfect yet.
Anyway, they say that AlphaGo showed a great
performance and there is still a positive future
for artificial intelligence.
