Special Temporary Holiday

compared to a year ago. The export decline
that was about 8.2% in March is expected to
expand by more than 10% last month. The main
reason was lack of working days. Because of
this temporary holiday, in the last month, the
total working days were 22.5 days. This is 1.5
days fewer than that of last year. Experts say
that one reduced working day can cause export
to decrease by two billion to three billion won.
An exportation partaker said, “The government
designated a temporary holiday suddenly, so the
days of operation were reduced. When operation
days were reduced, exportation declined too.”
Especially, when this temporary holiday was
decided only one week prior. Because of this,
the workers at medium and small firms and the
majority of temporary employees weren't given
the benefits. In fact, the Korean Federation of
Small and Medium Business investigated 350
businesses. Six out of ten small businesses
answered that they would work on the
temporary holiday. The reason was the expected
decline in production and sales. Especially,
during long holidays, if people consume abroad,
the effects of designating a temporary holiday
will be reduced. The government said that the
effects on consumption were bigger but because
of long holidays, owner-operated businesses had
negative impacts. It is a difficult problem. It is
important to find ways to balance pros and cons
of such a policy.
