cultural content industry, followed by music ($533 million) and broadcasting ($368 million). These were
followed by tourism ($2.65 billion), cosmetics ($969 million), and food ($711 million).
Looking at the effect of exports caused by the Korean Wave on the national economy in 2019, the
production effect was 25.68 trillion won, up 28.6% from the last year (2018). The value-added effect was
an increase of 31.4% year-on-year to 11.58 trillion won, and employment effect was an increase of 34.8%
to 174,263 persons.
The "2019 STUDY ON RIPPLE EFECTS OF HALLYU" was based on statistical analysis such as research
on the economic ripple effect of the Korean Wave, analysis of the non-economic value of the Korean
Wave, and research on strengthening domestic soft power using the Korean Wave. The economic ripple
effect of the Korean Wave was calculated based on statistics that quantified the Korean Wave index, the
Korean Wave export effect, and the national economic ripple effect using a survey of 8,000 people who
experienced Korean Wave content in 17 countries and export data from 16 industries. The economic ripple
effect of the Korean Wave was analyzed for 8 cultural content industries such as broadcasting and music
and 8 consumer goods such as food, cosmetics, and tourism.
Kim Yong Rak, head of KOFICE said, "The Korean Wave, which has been expanded to various levels
through BTS and other K-Content, is currently creating various economic or non-economic effects." and
"The economic ripple effect of the Korean Wave is very large. Recently, because of BTS's performance, it
has the effect of exporting millions of vehicles in terms of Hyundai Motors.”
