Achievements through
Economic diplomacy of Korea
“Sales diplomacy”
Recently, Yoon Suk-yeol, the president of Korea is achieving
diplomatic achievements through “sales diplomacy”. “Sales
diplomacy” means that the president, like a salesman, travels
to various countries and uses diplomatic skills to conclude
deals beneficial to the national interest. Sales Diplomacy is
actually an English word used only in Korea. Internationally,
the universal expression "economic diplomacy" is mainly
used. Korea has recently achieved great results with such
sales diplomacy.
However, these positive results have not always been
realized. In the past, there have been many criticisms and
failures of sales diplomacy. On September 21, 2022, the
Korea-Japan summit was held by President Yoon visiting a
building at a UN event site in New York where Japanese Prime
Minister Kishida was attending. It was in the form of a ‘brief
meeting’. The Korean reporters were notified of the meeting
after the meeting started, and not a single reporter was able
to go to the conference room. In response, the public said, “he
pushed the first button wrong.” “For the Korea-Japan summit,
it was necessary to approach carefully and slowly agree on
each statement, even the announcement. However, as the
desire to hold the summit was ahead of schedule, everything
was ruined, and it was like giving Japan the initiative in future
Korea-Japan relations again.” Also, past meetings between
the leaders of South Korea and the US ended in a 48-second
conversation. Regarding this, the public pointed out that
President Yoon did not have to forcefully meet President
Biden.
However, Korea has now reaped many benefits from sales
diplomacy despite these previous failures. In France, the
focus was on sales to attract the 2030 World Expo (World
Expo) to Busan, and during the state visit to Vietnam,
remarkable results were achieved in economic and security
cooperation.
According to the Office of the President on the 25th,
President Yoon attended the General Assembly of the
Organization for International Expositions (BIE) in Paris,
France, and held a PR campaign for the '2030 Busan Expo'
in more than 170 countries, highlighting Korea's 'contributory
diplomacy' and at the same time promoting it through the
'Paris Initiative'. He shared the digital state affairs agenda
with the world.
