But there are optimists such as Bill Gates, claiming AI development creates new jobs and the economy will
continue to prosper. This is correct, but there are also people arguing this is still an issue. For example,
drawing pictures would be replaced by AI and new job will be inserting keywords and selecting results. The
problem is that some middle school students can do this job in few hours. This means expertise acquired
over the years became useless and replaced by only few hours.
One of the most famous examples is the Industrial Revolution in 19th-century Britain. At that time, people
expected machines would make their life better and more relaxed. Experts who dedicated their whole life
were suddenly kicked out of work and had no choice but to do simple repetitive work to make money and
support their family. Lack of expertise means ‘You can be replaced’ and this means low salary. Not only
women, but also the elderly and kids had to work to sustain their life. It was the worst working environment
and 12 hours of work was normal.
Amazon, the world’s biggest online shopping company, is replacing many services into AI such as analysis
product, images, videos, fault detection, storage management, quality control, customer service while still
delegating the task of putting items into boxes to humans. It is not because humans can do the work better
than AI, but because it is cheaper than AI. Of course, the wages are lower than jobs with expertise. This
reveals humans would do jobs that AI can’t do, but also jobs that AI don’t do.
Yuval Noah Harari, the author of the book Sapiens, said creativity is just a process of breaking down
something into details and reassembling them. He claimed AI is good at that process, so AI would replace
expertise and only simple and repetitive work would be left. For example, rather than a doctor, the symbol
of expertise, nurses who inject a baby and bandage a wound would survive. This is opposite of common
sense that simple repetitive jobs will be replaced by AI and jobs with high expertise such as lawyer and
doctor will survive.
