grain continues to increase. About a dozen countries
have reached out to the Ministry of External Affairs,
seeking clarification on whether their request for
Indian wheat would be fulfilled." However, the Indian
government kept open the option to export wheat as
tool of economic diplomacy. India will allow export of
grams to other countries that require wheat for meeting
their food security needs. 47 countries have sought
food grains from India with suggestion that many other
countries would also need them.
In this way, India is trying to ease regulation. But there are still many problems.
Meanwhile, On May 24, according to Reuters and
Bloomberg, the Indian government also plans to limit
sugar exports to 10 million tons in the 2021-2022
marketing year (starting in October every year). The
intention is to stockpile sufficient inventory ahead of
October, when the 2022-2023 marketing year begins.
India is the world’s number 1 sugar producer. In spite
of this fact, Exports will be limited to 2 million tons
from next month to September. Because of the Indian
government’s move to sugar exports, sugar prices on
the London Futures Exchange rose about 1% and Indian sugar producers plunged.
India’s restrictions on sugar and wheat exports are a pain to people all over the world.
