Protest in Iran
Why and how did the protests start?
Demonstrations are taking place in Iran to protest the death of Mahsa Amini, who died after being arrested by
authorities for not wearing the hijab properly. The “hijab protests” that lasted for two months are said to have
killed more than 300 people. While anti-government protests calling for “women, life, and human rights” are
spreading throughout Iran, and solidarity protests continue around the world, including in the United States
and Europe, Iran is responding harshly by using violence against protesters and imprisoning them. Criticism of
the Iranian government's violent suppression of protests is growing. Protests are spreading further, centered on
university students, and Iranian local media reported that police shot tear gas at students protesting in Tehran.
Iran's position is that it will not cooperate with the investigation by international organizations. Iran's supreme
leader has termed the three-week protests a "riot." A large number of dead caused by hard-line suppression
during the protests cannot even be properly buried.
On the day of the Iranian match at the recent World Cup in Qatar, Iranian football fans could indirectly protest
by drawing an X in the middle of the national flag. The Iranian government also took advantage of the World
Cup in Qatar to allay public dissatisfaction related to the protests. Even the soccer team players refused to sing
the national anthem on the ground in solidarity with the protests and criticized the government in the stands.
It also specially released 715 imprisoned demonstrators. It is said that this action was made to celebrate the
victory of the soccer team.
